Few people doubt the benefits in todayÂ’s crisis-hit times of having a solid grounding in English if you wish to improve your job prospects. Many people decide to learn English cheaply by working part-time and looking for English classes during their spare time and, for many people, this is a formula that works well.
However, it has its pitfalls. Many people work long hours for very little money, collecting glasses in pubs, helping out in hotel kitchens, etc. and by the time they have finished work they are exhausted and in no mood to sit in a class with several other people during their spare time. Also, their work might bring them into very limited contact with the general public, so their chances of improving their English are also limited. A good alternative is to learn English cheaply by working at one of the English-language academies. There are some academies that are truly corporate enterprises, with the resources to match; specialised learning centres with audio-visual facilities, fleets of mini-buses and accommodation that would put some hotels to shame. However, these tend to have prices that reflect the investment that is required. Some of the smaller academies have more limited resources, but in turn they are able to offer more personal classes that are tailored to the specific needs of their students. Such companies, with their limited resources, often require assistance from people that are willing to lend a hand in the running of the organisation in exchange for cheaper tuition fees. And ‘lending a hand’ can take various forms; web-site design, translating and administration work, cooking and/or cleaning, shopping expeditions, driving on student excursions or simply picking other students up at the airport or dropping them off when it is time to leave. There is always some task that needs to be completed and the organisers of such academies do not always have the time for the everyday jobs that can justifiably be delegated. Here is where you might step in…
Why not try learning English cheaply by working in exchange for lessons? This will often bring you into much closer contact with the teachers than if you were simply having lessons. It may also get you involved in activities that will bring you into contact with members of the public, providing true-life opportunities for you to put your English skills into practice, whether it is speaking or listening to others speak.
