A Different Perspective on Watches

I’m Oliver Smith, an independent watch writer based in London and the person behind OSW. This website grew out of my interest in the details that make one watch different from another, from the shape of a case to the way a movement has been designed.

OSW covers established watchmakers, new releases, collection histories and the replica watch market. The idea is straightforward: to give readers useful information about the watches they are researching, without making every article sound like a sales pitch.

There is plenty to admire in an original Rolex, Omega or Patek Philippe. There are also interesting questions to ask about replica versions inspired by those designs. I believe the two subjects can be discussed together, provided the differences are made clear.

What You’ll Find on OSW

Much of the website focuses on recognisable collections, including the Rolex Submariner, Omega Speedmaster, TAG Heuer Monaco, Breitling Navitimer and Audemars Piguet Royal Oak. I also write about less familiar references, historical developments and watches that introduce something unusual.

When looking at replica watches, I pay particular attention to proportions, dial finishing, case construction, materials and movement differences. Two watches can look nearly identical in a photograph while being quite different in construction and operation.

That is why I try to distinguish confirmed specifications of genuine watches from claims made about replica versions. An original manufacturer’s movement, water-resistance rating or material specification should never be attributed to a replica without evidence.

How the Articles Are Prepared

My starting point is the exact reference being discussed. Where available, I consult manufacturer specifications, historical records, official announcements and reliable watch publications. I then consider which details are likely to matter to someone comparing the design with another watch.

Not every article is based on physical access to a watch. When a piece relies on published information and photographs rather than personal examination, I aim to make that distinction clear. First-hand observations should be identified as such, not implied by a headline.

If a factual error is brought to my attention, I welcome the opportunity to examine it and make an appropriate correction.

Our Independence

OSW is an independent watch publication. It is not an official website of Rolex, Omega, Breitling, TAG Heuer, Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, Hublot or any other manufacturer mentioned in its articles.

Brand names, product photographs and reference numbers are used to identify and discuss the watches concerned. The appearance of a brand on OSW does not imply its approval, sponsorship or endorsement.

Any commercial relationships or affiliate links are disclosed where relevant. Editorial distinctions between original watches and replica interpretations remain important regardless of commercial arrangements.
