Case Study - Mahmood
I feel much better about myself because I am filling my time with something useful, rather than just sitting in the hostel.
Active Futures
Mahmood had been in a hostel for about a month when the Active Futures Project Officer visited the centre to provide a talk on volunteering. He made an appointment to visit the Volunteer Centre Westminster to discuss volunteering options. He was recruited onto the Active Futures project to carry out administration, outreach and one-to-one support with clients. His voluntary outreach work involved going to other Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) organisations, and encouraging refugees and asylum seekers to volunteer. He provided a much needed link with some 'hard to reach' communities.
"Sharing my experience I have from home I am gaining confidence and improving my English language as well as work experience, which I will need once I find a job. I feel much better about myself because I am filling my time with something useful, rather than just sitting in the hostel. I feel more confident, dealing with new people and using computers."
